The department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine offers expert, comprehensive care for adult and pediatric patients with orthopedic injuries and illnesses, including sports medicine, spine, trauma, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, oncology and total joint replacement care.
We offer patients a one-stop approach to orthopedic care that includes recognized specialists proficient in the latest techniques and treatments, state-of-the-art diagnostic services, timely appointments, and a variety of payment and insurance options. The Baylor Institute for Hand and Upper Extremity Disorders is the South's leading center for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of hand and upper extremity disorders. Our hand surgeons treat a variety of conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, nerve and vessel damage and congenital deformities. The institute's medical staff is recognized internationally for their research and clinical experience in acute trauma, industrial injuries, pediatric disorders, arthroscopy, sports medicine, arthritis, microsurgery and plastic reconstruction, as they relate to the hand and upper extremities.
The Baylor Orthopedic Spine Institute provides a wide variety of programs for spinal disorders. One of the premier spine centers in North America, the institute offers a comprehensive, non-operative as well as surgical approach to spine care. Specialized expertise is available for the treatment of traumatic injuries, degenerative disease, deformity and tumors.
The Baylor Sports Medicine Institute is renowned for state-of-the-art treatment of athletic injuries, top flight research and educational facilities, and orthopedic surgeons specialty trained in sports medicine. The institute specializes in the prompt diagnosis of athletic injuries and immediate initiation of appropriate rehabilitative techniques. We perform surgery if necessary and exercise all options to facilitate the return of the injured athlete to their activities of choice. Our doctors have served as the team physicians for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, Houston Comets, University of Houston and Houston Baptist University, as well as for local high school athletes and injured athletes of all ages. We are leaders in the development of new surgical techniques and devices, working with the medical industry to make these ideas available to other surgeons and the public.
The General Orthopedics Institute offers general orthopedic physicians with the knowledge and capability to treat all areas of the musculoskeletal system. This includes diagnosing a condition or disorder, identifying and treating an injury, providing rehabilitation to an affected area or function, and establishing prevention protocol to inhibit further damage to a diseased area or component of the musculoskeletal system.
Michael H. Heggeness, M.D., Ph.D., is professor and chair of the department of Orthopedic Surgery. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Heggeness specializes in spinal disorders and surgery of the spine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. He completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Heggeness also serves as director for the Center for Orthopedic Research and Education at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, chief of the Orthopedic Spine Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston, and spine consultant to the Houston Ballet.
Arthritis and Joint Reconstruction
Melvyn A. Harrington Jr., M.D., associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthritis and joint reconstruction, including total and minimally invasive knee and hip replacements. After completing his undergraduate degree at The Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Harrington earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn. He completed his internship and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He also completed a fellowship in adult reconstructive orthopedic surgery at Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston. Previously, Dr. Harrington served as assistant professor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine for eight years.
Brian S. Parsley, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and adult reconstructive surgery. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Parsley earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School, where he also completed his orthopedic residency. He completed a one-year fellowship at the Anderson Orthopedic Research Institute in Arlington, VA, where he specialized in joint replacement arthroplasty and participated in the surgical treatment of 400 joint replacement patients.
Foot & Ankle
John V. Marymont, M.D., associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is chief of the Foot and Ankle Section of the department of Orthopedic Surgery. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Marymont earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Tennessee. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he worked with the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland State University, John Carroll University and the Cleveland Ballet. He also completed a foot and ankle fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital, an affiliate of the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.
General Orthopedic Surgery
David M. Green, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston and a Master of Science degree in biology from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. He completed an internship in general surgery, a residency in orthopedic surgery and a fellowship in orthopedic research at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Green also completed a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery.
General Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
William A. Phillips M.D., professor for the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in pediatric orthopedics. He also serves as chief of the section of Orthopaedic Surgery and Scoliosis at Texas Children's Hospital. Following undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, Dr. Phillips earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his internship and a residency in orthopedic surgery at University of Chicago Hospital, followed by a fellowship in spinal disorders at Rush-Presbyterian/St.Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
Hand and Upper Extremity
Jeffrey E. Budoff, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the hand and upper extremities. He has extensive experience in arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, and in surgical reconstruction for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthritis - including reconstruction of the hand and wrist, and total elbow and total shoulder replacements. After graduating cum laude from Harvard University, Dr. Budoff earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York, with honors. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Arlington Hospital (Georgetown University affiliate) and a hand surgery fellowship at California-Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.
Michael J. Epstein, M.D., is professor of Orthopedic Surgery, chief of the Hand and Upper Extremity Section and director of the Orthopaedic Hand Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Epstein's clinical focus includes acute and reconstructive hand surgery and surgical reconstruction of the rheumatoid hand. He earned his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, followed by a surgical internship at St. Luke's Hospital Center in New York. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York and a residency in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Epstein completed two fellowships in hand surgery, one at University Hospital, Hand Unit, in Lund, Sweden, and another at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in England.
Erin K. Greer, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in surgery of the hand and upper extremities. Dr. Greer earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed his surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency. He completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Greer is active on the teaching faculty at Ben Taub General Hospital, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital.
James B. Stafford IV, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in the hand and upper extremities. Dr. Stafford is board certified in surgery, hand surgery and plastic surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, followed by an internship and residency in general surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. He received his plastic surgery training at the University of Virginia, followed by a fellowship in hand surgery at the internationally recognized Strickland, Steichen, Kleinman & Hastings Hand Center in Indianapolis, IN.
Hand and Upper Extremity - Pediatric and Adult
Idris S. Gharbaoui, M.D., associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery, earned his medical degree from Mohamed V University, Rabat, Morocco, where he remained for residency training in both general surgery and orthopedic surgery. He completed numerous hand surgery fellowships, including hand and upper limb surgery training at Reims University Hospital in France, pediatric hand surgery training at Trousseau Children's Hospital in Paris, and hand surgery training at the Institut Francais de la main in Paris. He also completed fellowships in pediatric orthopedics, plastic surgery of the hand, and orthopedic hand surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
Musculoskeletal Oncology
Mark E. Johnson, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic oncology. Dr. Johnson earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his orthopedic residency at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is an expert in treating all benign and malignant conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, as well as complex musculoskeletal reconstruction.
Spinal Disorders
Darrell S. Hanson, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is an orthopedic spine surgeon specializing in scoliosis and other spinal disorders. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Following undergraduate studies at Rice University in Houston, Dr. Hanson earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery. He completed fellowship training in spinal surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO.

Charles A. Reitman, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in spine surgery, with extensive experience in spine trauma and spinal disorders. He also serves as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery Service at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston. Dr. Reitman earned his bachelor's degree with a certificate in physical therapy from the University of California, San Francisco. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed an internship in general surgery, a residency in orthopedic surgery, and a fellowship in spine surgery. Dr. Reitman is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Spinal Disorders - Pediatric and Adult
Jacob Weinberg, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in orthopedic surgery of the spine for pediatric and adult patients, with a focus on scoliosis. After graduating summa cum laude from Columbia University in New York, Dr. Weinberg earned his medical degree from John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He completed his internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New Hyde Park, NY. He completed a fellowship in adult spine surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston and a fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Harvard Medical School/Children's Hospital.
Sports Medicine
Steven Flores, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in sports medicine, including arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle. Dr. Flores completed undergraduate studies in biomedical science at Texas A&M University, graduating summa cum laude. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, graduating with honors as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) national honor medical society. He completed a general surgery internship and an orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, then returned to Baylor College of Medicine for fellowship training in sports medicine at the renowned Baylor Sports Medicine Institute. Previously, Dr. Flores was involved in Chicago’s Public School Football Program and their Sports Physical Administration program, providing medical care and supervision to prevent and treat injuries in school athletes. While in Houston, he has assisted in the care of the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, University of Houston athletics and various Houston area high schools. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Sports Medicine.
Walter R. Lowe, M.D., associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery, specializes in sports medicine with an emphasis on diagnosing and treating a wide range of knee, shoulder and elbow injuries and disorders. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and serves as a team physician for the Houston Texans, The University of Houston, Houston Baptist University and many area high schools. Dr. Lowe earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. He completed his internship in general surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital, followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery at Tarrant County Affiliated Hospitals, both in Fort Worth, TX. He completed fellowship training in sports medicine at the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
Mark W. Maffet, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of sports medicine injuries. He serves as a team physician for the Houston Comets and Houston Baptist University. Dr. Maffet earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed his internship and his orthopedic surgery residency. He completed his orthopedic surgery fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, where he worked extensively with athletes at both the amateur and professional levels.
Patrick C. McCulloch, M.D., assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive arthroscopic joint surgery. He has extensive experience in cartilage regeneration and transplantation. Dr. McCulloch earned his medical degree from the University of California in San Francisco followed by a general surgery internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Program in Boston and a fellowship in sports medicine and cartilage restoration at RUSH Orthopedic Sports Medicine in Chicago, IL. Dr. McCulloch has been involved in the team care of athletes for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Steel Hockey, Chicago Bandits, New England Patriots and Boston Bruins, as well as Harvard University and University of Houston athletes.
