Cataract Physicians

Peter T. Chang, MD, associate professor of Ophthalmology, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataracts. Dr. Chang earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, followed by an internship at Baptist Health System, also in Birmingham. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine and fellowship training in glaucoma at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami.


Yvonne I. Chu, MD, MBA, is an associate professor of Ophthalmology for Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Dr. Chu earned her medical degree and completed her ophthalmology residency training at BCM. She also earned a Master of Business Administration from Rice University. Dr. Chu's clinical interests include comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery.


M. Bowes Hamill, MD, associate professor of Ophthalmology, specializes in cornea and external disease, anterior segment and cataract surgery, refractive surgery and ocular trauma. Dr. Hamill earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where he remained for his internship in internal medicine and a residency in ophthalmology. He completed fellowship training in cornea and external diseases at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in cornea and anterior segment at The Wilmer Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hamill is board certified in ophthalmology.


Douglas D. Koch, MD, is professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine and The Allen, Mosbacher, and Law Chair of Ophthalmology. He specializes in cataract and refractive surgery and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Koch earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, followed by an internship in internal medicine and a residency in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in cornea and anterior segment surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and a fellowship in anterior segment and refractive surgery at Baylor College of Medicine's Cullen Eye Institute.


Alice Y. Matoba, MD, associate professor of Ophthalmology, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataracts and cornea and external disease. After completing her undergraduate degree at Stanford University in California, Dr. Matoba earned her medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. She completed an internship in ophthalmology at Mount Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, a residency in ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, and a fellowship in cornea and external disease at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine.


Silvia Orengo-Nania, MD, is professor of Ophthalmology and a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataracts. Following undergraduate studies at Rice University in Houston, Dr. Orengo-Nania completed her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine where she remained for her internship and a residency in ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute. She completed a fellowship in glaucoma at Wills Eye Hospital, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.


Stephen C. Pflugfelder, MD, is professor of Ophthalmology and the James and Margaret Elkins Chair at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Pflugfelder is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and external disease, cataract and refractive surgery, and dry eye disease. He earned his medical degree from SUNY-Upstate Medical College in Syracuse, NY, followed by an internship at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Pflugfelder completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a cornea and external disease fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine.


Paul G. Steinkuller, MD, is associate professor of Ophthalmology and a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in pediatric ophthalmology. Following undergraduate studies at Duke University in Durham, NC, Dr. Steinkuller earned his medical degree from The George Washington School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed an internship in internal medicine at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Washington Hospital Center and a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.


Mitchell P. Weikert, MD, MS, assistant professor of Ophthalmology, specializes in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery. After earning his master of science in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, Dr. Weikert completed his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. He remained there for his internship and a residency in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine's Cullen Eye Institute. He completed fellowship training in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery at the University of Utah's John A. Moran Eye Center, Salt Lake City. Dr. Weikert is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Richard A. Lewis, MD, MS, is professor of Ophthalmology, professor of Medicine, professor of Pediatrics, and professor of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Lewis specializes in retinal diseases, ocular genetics, macular degeneration and comprehensive ophthalmology. Following undergraduate studies at Harvard College, Dr. Lewis completed his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, where he remained for his internship in internal medicine, a residency in ophthalmology, and fellowship training in retinal diseases. He also completed a fellowship in ophthalmology - retinal diseases at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in Bronx, NY, and a fellowship in macular diseases at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami.

A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Jones specializes in cornea and external disease. Douglas P. Marx, MD, instructor, specializes in cosmetic surgeries of the eyelids and face and oculoplastic surgeries - ophthalmic plastic, lacrimal and orbital. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. His extensive training includes an internship in internal medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, a residency in ophthalmology here at Baylor College of Medicine - Cullen Eye Institute, and a fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at the Oregon Health and Sciences University - Casey Eye Institute in Portland.


Michael T. Yen, MD, associate professor of Ophthalmology, specializes in oculoplastics, ocular oncology and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and face. Dr. Yen earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, completing his internship at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center. He completed residency training in ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Center for Facial Appearances in Salt Lake City, UT. Benjamin Frankfort, MD, PhD, is an instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology. He was a member of the MD-PhD program at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his graduate training in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics. Dr. Frankfort's medical training includes a residency in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as a glaucoma fellowship at the Cullen Eye Institute of BCM. During his fellowship he was named a Heed Foundation fellow and received a Career Development Award from Research to Prevent Blindness. Dr. Frankfort's practice focuses on the medical and surgical management of glaucoma.

Petros Carvounis, MD, FRCSC, assistant professor, is board certified in ophthalmology. Dr. Carvounis earned his medical degree at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. His training includes an internship at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, a residency in ophthalmology at The George Washington University and a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Carvounis has been named as part of the Best Doctors in America and as a Top Ophthalmologist in America.


Robert Coffee, MD, MPH, assistant professor, is board certified in ophthalmology and specializes in retinal and vitreous surgery. Dr. Coffee earned his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed an internship and a residency at Baylor College of Medicine and received specialty fellowship training in retinal surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of UCLA. He also earned a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University. Dr. Coffee's clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments and ocular epidemiology.


Alice R. McPherson, MD, is a professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. Dr. McPherson is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical College in Madison where she remained for a residency in ophthalmology. She also completed a fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in retina diseases and surgery.

Anisa Gire, OD, is an optometrist at the Alkek Eye Center of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Dr. Gire earned her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston. Her training includes a cornea and contact lens fellowship also at the University of Houston. Dr. Gire's clinical interests are specialty contact lens fits, including post-graft corneas; diseases resulting in irregular astigmatism, such as keratoconus; cosmetic contact lenses, including multi-focal lenses; and Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis.


Jazmin A. Logendra, OD, FAAO, is an optometrist at the Alkek Eye Center at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her optometry degree at The New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA, and a dual residency in primary care and low vision at West Haven VA Medical Center - Yale University in Connecticut. Dr. Logendra completed her fellowship and is an active member of the American Academy of Optometry. Her clinical practice focuses on comprehensive optometric eye examinations and contact lens fitting.


Priya D. Mathew, OD, is an optometrist in the Alkek Eye Center. Dr. Mathew earned her degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Elkins Park. She specializes in comprehensive optometric examinations and contact lens fittings.


Lan K. Nguyen, OD, is an optometrist at the Alkek Eye Center of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Before joining BCM, Dr. Nguyen was in private practice in Houston. Dr. Nguyen earned her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston. Her training includes a cornea and contact lens residency and optometry research fellowship also at the University of Houston. Dr. Nguyen's clinical interests are specialty contact lens fits, including post-graft corneas; diseases resulting in irregular astigmatism, such as keratoconus; and cosmetic contact lenses, including multi-focal lenses.
