Prolapse Surgery or Surgical Repair of Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Prolapse surgery is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which the tissues that support the pelvic organs become stretched or damaged, causing the organs they support to drop down and press against the wall of the vagina. This causes a bulge or protrusion. In some cases, the organ will drop down so much that the bulge sticks out through the vaginal opening.
These sagging or falling organs can cause pain, discomfort, pressure in the vagina, and urinary and bowel dysfunction, among other symptoms.
When nonsurgical treatments aren't effective, prolapse surgery is used to restore the normal structure and function of the pelvic organs. Surgery to correct pelvic support problems can be performed either through the vagina or the abdomen depending on the support problem.
There are several procedures for correcting pelvic organ prolapse, depending on the type of prolapse (bladder, rectal, uterine or vaginal):
- Cystocele or anterior wall prolapse, where the bladder drops from its normal place into the vagina
- Rectocele or posterior wall prolapse, where the rectum bulges into or out of the vagina
- Uterine prolapse, where the uterus drops down into the vagina
- Vaginal vault prolapse with enterocele, where the top of the vagina loses its support and drops, often after a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
