Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Historically, many treatments for women's conditions required major surgery, hospitalization, and a lengthy recovery period. Today, the vast majority of these surgeries can be performed using minimally invasive techniques that eliminate the need to make a large incision in the abdomen.

The two types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery are laparoscopic and hysteroscopic, which involve using tiny scopes and surgical instruments inserted either through very small incisions in the abdomen (laparoscopic) or through the vagina (hysteroscopic).

Benefits of these less invasive approaches include faster recovery, less pain, less scarring, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays, if hospitalization is required. Many of these procedures can be safely performed in the clinic setting under local anesthesia.

These minimally invasive procedures can be used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis, among other conditions. Minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment options include

  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroids)
  • Laparoscopic repair of pelvic organ prolapse
  • Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis
  • Laparoscopic excision of ovarian cysts
  • Hysteroscopic excision of fibroids
  • Hysteroscopic lysis of adhesions Hysteroscopic sterilization (Essure)
  • Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation (for heavy periods)
  • Office hysteroscopy for evaluation of abnormal bleeding

My nurse was very nice and a great comfort during a difficult time. I appreciated her words of encouragement and her genuine concern for me. All of the office staff was helpful and treated patients with respect. How wonderful the health care industry would be if everyone was like your staff - especially during a very dark hour of my life.
