Bladder Instillation

Bladder instillation is a procedure used to treat inflammation of the bladder wall and lining, a common condition called cystitis.

Also known as a bladder bath or wash, the procedure involves filling the bladder with a solution and holding that solution for a period of time, up to 15 minutes. The solution is then drained from the bladder through a catheter.

Bladder instillations typically involve a course of treatments over several weeks.

Because doctors do not know what causes cystitis, treatments are aimed at relieving the woman's symptoms. The bladder instillation is believed to help relieve symptoms by more effectively reaching the tissue to reduce inflammation and block pain, or by coating and protecting the bladder.
