Barrett's Esophagus

We provide specialized, comprehensive care for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer through the Barrett's Esophagus Center at Baylor Clinic.

What is Barrett's Esophagus?

Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the lining of the esophagus is changed due to repeated exposure to stomach acid. It is typically caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or acid reflux disease, which causes the juices of the stomach to go back into the esophagus.

While most patients with Barrett's esophagus require simple medical treatment, a small number develop a relatively rare but often deadly type of cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma. Patients with Barrett's esophagus are also at increased risk of developing ulcers and a narrowing of their esophagus, which can lead to problems swallowing food.

Patients over age 50 suffering from heartburn or reflux symptoms should be evaluated to determine if Barrett's esophagus is present and to assess for precancerous features.

At the Barrett's Esophagus Center at Baylor Clinic, we offer the latest screening and therapeutic techniques for managing GERD and Barrett's esophagus. Our expert team of specialists uses advanced endoscopic technology including Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) to detect and assess suspicious tissue, and new state-of-the-art treatment such as the use of radiofrequency ablation (BARRX) to remove suspicious tissue.

I was very impressed with the interior of the building - it was the first time I had been here. I found your staff to be professional, courteous and friendly. When I went in for my scan, I appreciated how friendly my caregiver was, how she took the time to explain the procedure, and her skill at drawing blood. This place is first class.
