Hamid Afshar, MD, assistant professor, is a cardiac electrophysiologist, board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Electrophysiology. Electrophysiology studies the electrical activities of the heart, allowing for assessment and treatment of arrhythmias. Dr. Afshar earned his medical degree from Tehran University for Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. He completed his clinical research and clinical fellowships in electrophysiology services at Baylor College of Medicine, The Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, and also at Ochsner Medical Institute, New Orleans, where he completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship. He served as a staff physician in electrophysiology at Ochsner Clinic Institute, New Orleans.
David Aguilar, MD, assistant professor, is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Internal Medicine, Echocardiography and Nuclear Cardiology. Dr. Aguilar earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and his cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. Dr. Aguilar's special interests include general cardiology, metabolic diseases and cardiac imaging.
Basant Arya, MD, assistant professor, is board certified in Internal Medicine. His clinical interests include general cardiology with a focus on coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease. Dr. Arya specializes in non-invasive cardiac imaging including echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Arya earned his medical degree from Madras Medical College, Chennai, India. He completed residencies in internal medicine at the Royal College of Physicians, London, UK and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI. He also completed a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Yochai Birnbaum, MD, is a professor of Medicine and John S. Dunn Sr. Chair in the section of Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) as well as Chief of Consultative Services at Baylor Heart Clinic and SLEH. Dr. Birnbaum is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine. Before joining BCM, Dr. Birnbaum served on the faculty of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. Dr. Birnbaum earned his medical degree from Hadassah Medical School at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. His extensive postdoctoral training includes a medical internship at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, an internal medical residency at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, Israel; a cardiology fellowship at Rabin Medical Center in Petah-Tiqva, Israel; a research fellowship in cardiology at The Heart Institute, Good Samaritan Hospital and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a research fellowship in echocardiography at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Birnbaum specializes in echocardiography, electrocardiography, clinical cardiology and acute coronary syndrome.
Biykem Bozkurt, MD, FACC, professor, is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine. Dr. Bozkurt is the chief of cardiology section at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her special interests include congestive heart failure, general cardiology and women's health. Dr. Bozkurt received her medical degree from the University of Istanbul, Turkey. She completed her residency in internal medicine and her cardiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. She also completed a heart failure and cardiac transplantation fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, PA.
Jose Díez, MD, FACC, FSCAI, assistant professor, is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Interventional Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He also serves as the director of Interventional Cardiology Research. Dr. Díez specializes in coronary artery disease and interventional cardiology. His areas of expertise are coronary and peripheral percutaneous procedures. He earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Medical School in Bogotá D.C., Colombia. He completed internal medicine residencies at Boston University School of Medicine and Universitario San Ignacio, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. Dr. Díez completed his cardiology fellowship at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital/The Texas Heart Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Fellow. Before joining BCM, Dr. Díez served as faculty at Tulane University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA.
John Farmer, MD, professor, is board certified in Internal Medicine. His clinical interests include preventive cardiology, lipid disorders and heart failure. Dr. Farmer earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine.
Wayne J. Franklin, MD, is medical director of the TACH Center. He also serves as assistant professor of Medicine and Pediatrics for the sections of Adult and Pediatric Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. Dr. Franklin is board certified in internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He completed a fellowship at the adult cardiovascular medicine and pediatric cardiology centers at Baylor College of Medicine, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital.
Joseph Huh, MD, associate professor, is board certified in Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Huh earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of California-Irvine and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine.
Kumudha Ramasubbu, MD, assistant professor, is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her clinical interests include cardiac transplantation, congestive heart failure, and general cardiology. Dr. Ramasubbu earned her medical degree from Ruprecht-Karls University, Heidelberg, Germany. She completed her residency in internal medicine at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH, and a fellowship in cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine.
Rashed Tabbaa, MD, FACC, associate professor of Medicine, is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Tabbaa's areas of expertise include general cardiology, nuclear cardiology, cardiovascular MRI and peripheral arterial disease. He earned his medical degree from the Alexandria University Medical School in Egypt. His postgraduate training includes an internal medicine residency in Huron Hospital, Cleveland, OH, and a cardiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Lily Zhang, MD, assistant professor, is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Zhang's clinical practice focuses on echocardiography, nuclear cardiac imaging, the coronary care unit, outpatient clinical care and consultations. She received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Her training includes an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California in San Diego and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease-noninvasive at Baylor College of Medicine.
