The Past
In the summer of 2003, the Board of Trustees at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) approved a new strategy for the college's delivery of adult clinical care. The plan: to become the premier clinical provider in the nation.
Central to that plan would be the establishment of the first adult outpatient care center of its kind – one that combined multiple specialties under one roof, in a collaborative, high-tech environment where everything evolved around the patient's needs and experience.
The vision was bold but fitting. As Baylor College of Medicine President and CEO Peter G. Traber, MD reported, "We are destined, equipped and ready to help shape the future of healthcare."
By the spring of 2004, a 2-phase plan was in place for the development of what would soon become known as Baylor Clinic.
The Present – Phase I
In June of 2005, Baylor Clinic opened its doors to patients, bringing to life a new era of adult clinical care.
Today, the vision of integrated, patient-centric clinical care is unfolding through the efforts of some 200+ Baylor Clinic physicians representing multiple specialties, all collaborating to improve the health of the community they serve.
Baylor Clinic patients enjoy every advantage and convenience modern medicine has to offer, including scientifically proven procedures and therapies, onsite, state-of-the-art laboratory and diagnostic services, electronic medical records that assure seamless, real-time transfer of patient information, and access to groundbreaking healthcare. As scientists pursue the promise of personalized medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor Clinic are proudly leading the way, using patients' own DNA to predict, treat and prevent disease.
The Future – Phase II
In July 2007, Baylor College of Medicine broke ground on a new Baylor Clinic and Hospital that is destined to transform the future of human health and healthcare. Slated to open in 2011, it will be the first facility built from the ground up to deliver personalized care based on genomic medicine. It also marks the first time in history that the College has its own inpatient facility.
The new healthcare campus will include an adult hospital, outpatient clinics, faculty offices and research space. Built on a platform of digital technology, the campus will fully integrate the College's primary missions of patient care, research and education, setting the stage for significant advancements in patient care, safety and the delivery of personalized medicine based on the latest scientific discoveries.
"We have staked our future and it's a good one – for our institution, for Houston and for the nation," said Robert H. Allen, chair of the BCM board of trustees.
